Observation Narrative
Plot location: steep SW-facing bluff fronting Potomac Creek near N tip of Big Marsh and ca. 0.7 miles NW of Boykins Island.
Field estimate from topo: (UTME): 296149 (UTMN):4247658.
Rock Types Present: shell-marl conglomerate boulders.
Huge, somewhat gnarled Quercus muhlenbergii and Q. montana trees dominate this narrow, strongly convex "nose" at the south end of a steep bluff fronting the tidal Potomac Creek. A dense clone of Asimina triloba prevails here and floristic diversity is much lower than in plot CROW005, located a short distance down the bluff. Because of the presence of small shell-marl conglomerate outcrops and boulders, soils of this site are abundantly endowed with calcium.
